Google Earth 5: Going back in time

I had recently downloaded the latest (beta) version of Google Earth for the new features: historical imagery, 3D view of ocean floors, and visit the landscapes of Mars.

During the tryout of Google Earth’s historical imagery, I thought about Gallaudet University and what the campus looked like back in time. So far, only the maps of 1949, 1988, 1994, 2002 and upward can be viewed. I took three screenshots of Gallaudet’s campus based on three different years, the last two being significant noteworthy: March 1949, April 1988 and October 2006. See these images below (click on each image to expand to full size):

You can barely see anyone camping out or mingling about at the Main entrance of the university during the Gallaudet Deaf Protest against JKF. ;)

Pretty cool, eh? The G.E.’s historical imagery has a time slider feature that you can manipulate back and forth through the times based on these public maps within Google Earth.

Go and download Google Earth (beta version 5), have fun exploring around and going back in time. :)

(I actually wish there are satellite images of Earth going back up to several thousand years ago to see how much the world had changed since then. Here’s hoping to the Looking Glass Project).

That’s awesome. I have no idea how amazing technology done in 1949 like that.

The US government used an earlier version of high-altitude aircraft to take reconnaissance photos of the lands at the time.
