New from Ancestry.com for 2009: Deaf Marriages 1889-1894

Hmm, something new coming soon from ancestry.com (click on the graphic screenshot below to expand):

ancestry_deafmarriages

No idea when that will come out, could be sooner or later this year, if you’re a Ancestry subscriber or thinking of doing your own family tree research, Ancestry.com could be the place to start out for you. I had a nice “ride” with it, picking out plentiful information of my family history, going back to the 13th century England and, in the cases of various intermarriage and interrelation of ancestors, going further back to the 8th century A.D. Europe. ;)

Happy hunting and researching your deaf family history.

Ancestry is a good tool, I agree. Thanks for sharing this interesting news! It’ll be a boon to genealogists and historians alike.

  2. Dianrez Says:

This posed some troubling questions in my mind. Who was the original owner or author of this set of records? How did Ancestry.com come by them?

One thought was that they might have been compiled by Edward Fay or Alexander Graham Bell in their research on eugenics as applied to deaf people.

  3. Under The Hill Says:

Dianrez, you’ll have to find out with ancestry.com. They have been busily collecting and digitizing old sources from all over the places ever since.

  4. Dennis L. Simpson Says:

To my understanding, the information taken out for the U.S. Deaf Marriages, 1889-1894 (even though the title was ridiculous) was from the data collected by Dr. Fay when he was trying to refute Alexander Graham Bell’s claim that deaf people should not married each other because they could produce more deaf children. All of the original data is now in Gallaudet University Archives.

  5. Under The Hill Says:

Thanks, Dennis, that explains it all. :)
